Sarkofagen står som en vokter og passer på Longyearbyen i sør. Søndag var vi på topptur opp hit, og fikk en suveren utsikt over Nybyen.

Nybyen er en brakkeby et par kilometer fra Longyearbyen. Deler av den eies av Studentsamskipnaden i Tromsø, og det er her de fleste studentene på UNIS bor under sin studietid i Longyearbyen.

. Turen går opp i en smal dal øst for Sarkofagen. Her går man i et merkelig løsmasselandskap dannet av breen som møter oss litt lengre opp i dalen . I disse vårtider er man vant til å få en del barnåler i klisteret. Her oppe er det sand og grus som legger seg som et svart lag oppe på snøen!

Turen opp er enkel og grei, og byr på en flott utsikt ned igjen mot byen. Videre nordover ser man over Adventfjorden og over på Hjortfjellet og Operafjellet. Sistnevnte var for øvrig stedet der et russisk passasjerfly hadde litt for lav høyde og styrtet for noen år tilbake.

På Platåfjellet ble en kvinne drept av isbjørn i 1996 da den gikk til angrep på teltet som kvinnen lå i.
