Tenk deg denne tanken: Året er 1947. Det er ikke noe som heter satellittelefon eller snøscooter. Du skal i land på en fangsthytte på Svalbard for å samle drivved i to måneder. Når to måneder har gått, skal en båt komme med en erfaren fangstmann som skal bo sammen med deg der om vinteren. Selv er du helt grønn på alt som heter fangst. To måneder går, tre måneder går, det blir mørketid, og ingen båt kommer..

Det var nettopp dette som skjedde med Roald Kvammen i 1947 . Kvammen var da 23 år gammel, og måtte tilbringe vinteren i fangsthytta på Hornsund på sørvest-spissen på Svalbard mutters alene.

Under mitt opphold på Svalbard var jeg så heldig å få oppleve et kåseri som Roald Kvammen holdt i Svalbard Kirke. Kvammen er i dag 82 år, og skulle få oppleve Hornsund for første gang på 59 år.

Skulle bare samle drivved
Som sagt skulle Roald Kvammen samle drivved i to måneder sommeren 1947. Kvammen hadde ikke erfaring fra fangstliv tidligere, men skulle forberede vinteren med å skaffe ved til fangsthytta. I september skulle båten komme med en fangstmann som skulle holde Kvammen med selskap, og lære han opp i fangstliv i løpet av vinteren 1947-48. Blant annet på grunn av vanskelige isforhold kom båten aldri tilbake, og tilbake sto en uerfaren mann på 23 år som ikke ante hva som hadde skjedd. Hadde de glemt han? Hadde båten forlist under fiske i Storfjorden? Hvis så var tilfelle, var det ingen som visste at han var plassert på Hornsund, er ingen kom til å lete etter han. Her var det om å gjøre å forberede seg på vinteren!

Båten kommer
Heldigvis endte historien godt, og sommeren 1948 kom skipet tilbake for å plukke opp Kvammen. Da hadde den uerfarne unggutten klart seg gjennom vinteren på et imponerende vis. Besetningen på båten var sikre på at det kom til å være et trist syn som møtte dem på hytta, og overraskelsen var derfor stor da Kvammen kom roende ut for å møte dem. Endelig fikk han andre enn seg selv å snakke med igjen!

I dag er Hornsund base for en gjeng polske polarforskere. Denne uka skulle presten i Longyearbyen ut til Hornsund, og dermed bød anledningen seg for Kvammen til å se denne plassen han overvintret for nesten 60 år siden.
