Svartisen fra øst er vanskelig å nå på en dagstur. Det enkleste er å ta en skikkelig turist-tur ved hjelp av turistbåten over Svartisvatnet. Fra vestenden av Svartisvatnet er det bare noen få kilometer å gå opp til brearmen Austerdalsisen. Dette ble også vårt valg denne våte juli dagen. Vi var i godt selskap sammen med et knippe franske og spanske turistvenner.

Austerdalsisen er en imponerende brearm der den i dag så vidt strekker seg ned til Austerdalsvatnet. Den er også den brearmen i Norge som har størst akkumulasjonsområde. Dagens brefront er derimot ikke noe å skryte av sammenlignet med hvor langt brearmen strakk seg for 100 år siden. Da gikk breen helt ned til Svartisvatnet og Svartisdalen. Etter hvert som breen trakk seg tilbake ble Austerdalsvatnet dannet .
