Landemerket på Sør-Helgeland ble besøkt i strålende juli vær. Torghatten er lett tilgjengelig, og det er kun en kort tur på godt opparbeidet sti fra Torghatten kurs- og feriesenter. Det tar 20 minutter fra parkeringen og opp til det velkjente og merkelige hullet i fjelltoppen sør for Brønnøysund.
Torghatten må være en av Norges aller mest kjente fjelltopper. Dette er nok ikke så rart siden det er rimelig uvanlig at det er hull tvers igjennom en massiv fjelltopp. Torghatten er derfor et hyppig besøkt fjell, og i motsetning til andre toppturer er det ikke toppen som er målet her
. Målet er det karakteristiske hullet som går tvers igjennom fjellet.

Hvis man ønsker å komme seg til toppen av Torghatten er nok dette en mye mer utfordrende tur enn turen opp til hullet. Toppen av Torghatten er utilgjengelig fra de fleste sider, men skal visstnok være bestigelig via en rute fra sør

. Fjellet er kjent for sitt karakteristiske hull, som går tvers gjennom fjellet. Dette hullet, som er 160 meter langt, 35 meter høyt, og 20 meter bredt, ble skapt under istiden. Is og vann gravde møysommelig i de løse bergartene, mens de hardere bergartene i fjellets topp stod imot. Gangturen opp til hullet skjer på en godt opparbeidet sti, og tar rundt 20 minutter.
Fjellet har fått sitt navn etter sin beliggenhet på øya Torget (Torg-) og at det kan minne om en fasong som en hatt(-hatten), altså Torghatten.
