Gjertvasstind er en topp som ofte forbindes med klatring og lang innmarsj. Men på våren kan man bestige denne majestetiske toppen med ski og enklere utstyr. Turen medfører kryssing av to breer, inkludert bratt skikjøring og et landskap som er helt unikt. Som mye annet i Hurrungane er også denne turen best egnet på våren da skredfaren som oftest er mindre og breene relativt trygge.

Endelig var helgen kommet da Sognefjellsveien skulle åpne. Forventningsfulle satte vi oss i bilen fra Trondheim retning Hurrungane. Disse alpine toppene er etter min mening noe av det råeste man kan oppleve i Norge på våren. Ved Botnen før Tindeklubbhytte startet vi å traverser oppover lia mellom Kolnosi og Nordre Skagstølstind, retning Styggedalsbreen. Vi hadde forhørt oss på forhånd med en lokal trakkemaskinfører fra Fortun som mente at breen skulle være relativt safe å gå over. Senere på våren og med mindre snø bør man absolutt sikre seg over breen. Ruten ned på Styggedalbreen og over på Gjertvassbreen byr på et fantastisk landskap der man kan se isen desperat forsøker å klamre seg fast i Styggedalstindene og brefall som gisper etter luft.

Skaret opp til Gjervassbreen er såpass bratt at skiene må på sekkern . Flere s-svinger tydet på at flere hadde vært her tidligere i uken. Vi valgte den mest trygge ruten opp til toppen via Brefallet øst for Gjervasstind. Hele siden er nordvendt, noe som innebærer at snøen er hard og fin. Selv på en solskinnsdag tar solen veldig lite. Rasfaren reduseres, mens skikjøringen handler mest om å ikke skli på goretexen helt til bunns. Med stegjern forserer man de 400 høydemeterne relativt kjapt. Like før vi kommer opp på ryggen gikk vi til venste rundt en hammer for å unngå det bratteste partiet. Ved harde snøforhold er det like greit å sette skiene igjen på ryggen før man tar den siste biten opp til toppen. Siste henget er relativt eksponert, så isøksa var grei å ha i bakhånd . Utsikten fra toppen er lite å diskutere, her ser man hele Norge.

Ved gode snøforhold er henget ned til Gjertvassbreen noe av det bedre man kan få tak i hvis man liker bratt skikjøring. Uheldigvis var snøen såpass hard at undertegnede ikke kjørte ned fra toppen flanken, innkjøringen ligger på drøyt 40 grader. Istedenfor tok vi den ”tunge turen” rundt hammeren der vi hadde gått opp. Når sogningane sier at det er ”hiske” hardt, så var det bare å belage seg på å utsette telemarksvingene til en senere anledning og kjøre parallelle svinger ned på breen. Ruten ned til Turtagrø gikk på ryggen øst for Styggedalsbreen, ned i Styggedalen og videre ned i Helgedalen. Her var snøen som ventet juicy og varm, og store telis signaturer ble satt.
